A washing machine that powers on but won’t spin is most often caused by a lid or door that isn’t latched, an overloaded or unbalanced drum, a blocked drain, or a worn drive belt. More serious causes include a weak motor capacitor, a failed motor or a faulty control board. Start with the simple checks, and stop using it if you hear a loud hum or smell burning.

What stops a washing machine from spinning?

  1. The lid or door isn’t fully latched. Many machines won’t spin for safety reasons.
  2. Too much laundry, or bunched on one side. The machine stops because the drum is unbalanced.
  3. Water isn’t draining. A blocked hose or drain filter stops it moving to the spin cycle.
  4. A worn or loose drive belt. The motor runs but the drum stays still.
  5. A weak motor capacitor. You hear a hum but nothing turns.
  6. A faulty control board or motor. Often with an error code or the machine switching itself off.

Safe checks you can do yourself

  • Close the door or lid firmly, then restart the programme.
  • Reduce the load and spread it evenly in the drum.
  • Unplug the machine, clean the drain filter and check the drain hose for kinks.
  • Note any error code on the display, because it helps the technician.

When do you need a technician?

  • A loud hum or metal grinding noise.
  • A burning smell, or the circuit breaker tripping when it starts.
  • Water leaking from underneath.
  • The problem persists after the checks above.
