A laptop that won’t turn on is most often caused by a faulty charger or battery, leftover static charge, or a mainboard fault. Start by checking the charger and doing a power reset. If there is still no sign of life, or the laptop has been exposed to liquid, take it to a technician and don’t open it yourself.
What stops a laptop from turning on?
- A faulty charger or cable, or a socket that isn’t working.
- A fully drained or failed battery, especially after a long time unused.
- Leftover static charge that stops the laptop from starting.
- A loose or damaged charging port, so no power gets in.
- A mainboard fault, for example from a short circuit, overheating or water.
- RAM or screen problems, when the laptop turns on but the screen stays black.
Safe steps you can try yourself
- Try another socket and a matching charger. Check whether the charging light comes on.
- Do a power reset. Unplug the charger, remove the battery if it is removable, then hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Reconnect and try again.
- Let it charge for 30 minutes if it hasn’t been used for a while, then try again.
- Tell dead from black screen. If the fan or lights come on, connect a monitor or TV over HDMI.
- Disconnect accessories such as USB drives, mice or docks, then try again.
When should it go to a technician?
- No lights, sound or response at all after the steps above.
- The laptop has been exposed to water or a drink.
- A burning smell, or the charger and laptop get very hot.
- It shuts down by itself repeatedly during use.
Avoid opening a laptop yourself without the right tools and experience. A broken connector or scratched component can make the repair harder.
