An air conditioner that runs but doesn’t cool is most often caused by a dirty filter, a unit that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time, or the wrong settings. More serious causes include a refrigerant leak, an outdoor fan that has stopped, or a compressor fault. Start with the checks you can safely do yourself, then call a technician if it still isn’t cold.

What causes an AC to stop cooling?

  1. Dirty filter. Dust restricts airflow, so the air coming out is less cold.
  2. Unit not cleaned for a long time. Dirt on the evaporator and condenser reduces cooling.
  3. Wrong settings. The wrong mode, a high set temperature, or doors and windows left open.
  4. Outdoor fan not spinning. Heat can’t escape, so the AC works hard without cooling.
  5. Refrigerant leak. Often shown by frost on the pipes or cooling that slowly gets weaker.
  6. Undersized unit. The AC is too small for a large or very hot room.
  7. Component failure. For example a faulty capacitor or compressor.

What can you safely check yourself?

  • Make sure the remote is on Cool, not Fan or Dry, and the temperature is set low enough.
  • Switch off and unplug the AC, open the indoor cover and wash the filter with water. Let it dry before refitting.
  • Look at the outdoor unit. Check that the fan is spinning and nothing is blocking it.
  • Close doors and windows, then wait 15 to 20 minutes.

When should you call an AC technician?

Call a technician if the filter is clean and the AC is still not cold, or if you notice any of these signs:

  • Frost on the pipes or the indoor unit.
  • Water dripping into the room.
  • A noisy or heavily vibrating outdoor unit, or a fan that doesn’t turn.
  • A burning smell, or the circuit breaker tripping when the AC starts. Switch it off and leave it off until it has been checked.
