A phone stuck in a boot loop is usually caused by a software problem after an update or a faulty app, a weak battery, or a mainboard fault. Software issues can sometimes be fixed with safe mode or a reset, but battery and mainboard faults need a technician. If the data on the phone matters, don’t jump straight to a factory reset.
What causes a boot loop?
- A failed or interrupted system update, for example when the battery dies mid-update.
- A faulty app that runs automatically at start-up.
- Full storage, so the system can’t run normally.
- A weak or swollen battery that cuts out when the phone needs a burst of power to start.
- A mainboard fault, for example after a drop, water exposure or frequent overheating.
Safe steps to try
- Charge for at least 30 minutes with a suitable charger, then try again.
- Boot into safe mode (the method varies by brand). If it works there, remove the most recently installed apps.
- Remove the memory card and accessories, then try again.
- Factory reset only as a last resort, and only if your data is backed up or not important.
When should it go to a technician?
- The phone still loops after the steps above.
- The battery looks swollen or the phone gets very hot. Stop charging it.
- The loop started after a drop or water exposure.
- The data inside matters and isn’t backed up.
