An LED TV that won’t turn on at all is most often caused by a problem in the power path: the socket, the power cable, a fuse, or the power supply module inside the TV. Another common cause is a mainboard fault, often after a power cut or a voltage surge. Check the power source safely first, and don’t open the case yourself because some parts carry high voltage.

What causes an LED TV to go completely dead?

Cause Typical sign
Faulty socket or power cable The TV works again on a different socket
Blown fuse Often after a power cut or lightning
Failed power supply module Standby light off, sometimes a burning smell
Mainboard fault Standby light on or blinking, but the TV won’t start
Backlight failure Sound but a dark screen (not completely dead)

Safe checks at home

  1. Try another socket and make sure the power cable is firmly plugged into the TV.
  2. Remove the stabiliser or extension strip and plug straight into the wall for a moment.
  3. Watch the standby light. Note whether it is off, on or blinking, because it helps the technician.
  4. Use the power button on the TV, not just the remote, and replace the remote’s batteries.
  5. Unplug for 5 to 10 minutes, then plug back in and try again.

When should the TV go to a technician?

  • Still no response after the steps above.
  • A burning smell or a popping sound.
  • It died after a power cut, lightning or contact with water.
  • The standby light keeps blinking in a pattern.

If you smell burning, unplug the TV and don’t switch it on again until it has been checked.
