In a hot, humid climate like Depok’s, the air conditioner runs almost every day. Because it is always on, it rarely gets attention until the day it stops cooling properly or starts dripping water. In most cases, those problems share the same root cause: a unit that has not been cleaned for too long.
Here are the signs to watch for, and a sensible approach to regular servicing.
Signs your AC is due for a clean
Look out for any of the following:
- The air is not as cold as it used to be. Dust on the filter and evaporator restricts airflow, so the room takes longer to cool down.
- Water is dripping from the indoor unit. A drain line clogged with dirt causes condensation to overflow.
- A musty or unpleasant smell. Moisture and dust create ideal conditions for mould and bacteria.
- It is noisier than usual. A dirty or unbalanced fan can rattle or hum.
- Your electricity bill seems higher. A dirty unit has to work harder to reach the same temperature.
- Your nose or throat feels irritated. Some people find air from a dirty unit noticeably more uncomfortable.
If you notice two or more of these at the same time, your AC very likely needs cleaning.
Simple upkeep you can safely do yourself
Between services, a few easy steps help a lot:
- Switch the AC off and cut the power (unplug it, or switch off the breaker if it is hard-wired) before touching anything.
- Clean the air filter. Open the front cover of the indoor unit, slide out the filter and rinse it under running water. Let it dry completely in the shade before refitting it.
- Wipe the outside of the unit with a damp cloth rather than spraying it with water.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of boxes, plants and built-up debris.
Cleaning the filter yourself makes a real difference. It is not the same, however, as a full service, which cleans the evaporator coil, the blower fan and the drain line.
What to avoid
- Do not spray the inside of the unit with pressurised water without proper protection. Water can reach the control board and electrical parts.
- Do not open the outdoor unit or touch the pipes and fittings. They contain pressurised refrigerant that should only be handled by a technician with the right equipment.
- Do not top up the refrigerant yourself. Poor cooling is not always caused by low refrigerant, and incorrect charging can damage the compressor.
- Do not run the AC if you smell burning. Switch it off, cut the power and call a technician.
How often should you service it?
There is no single schedule that suits every space, because it depends on how much the unit is used and how dusty the surroundings are. As a general guide:
- Homes with normal use: have the AC cleaned roughly every three to six months.
- Units running most of the day, or rooms near a busy road: consider servicing more often.
- Offices, classrooms and waiting areas: set a fixed schedule, as these units run for long hours and serve many people.
Regular servicing is about more than cleanliness. While cleaning the unit, a technician can spot early warning signs, such as a fan that is starting to wear or a drain line that is close to blocking. Dealing with small issues early is usually far easier than waiting until the unit fails.
